Dulce De Leche – Homemade Caramel Made From Condensed Milk
Dulce de leche is a homemade caramel that requires only a can of condensed milk. Smart and absolutely delicious in all kinds of desserts and pastries.
Dulce de leche recipe – the recipe for homemade caramel
This is hardly a recipe, but here you get the procedure anyway. The only thing it takes to make the most delicious homemade caramel is, as I said, a can of condensed milk, and you have plenty of time. The caramel should cook for approx. three hours, but it almost fits itself in the pot along the way.
INGREDIENTS
HOMEMADE CARAMEL
1 can of condensed milk
HERE’S HOW YOU DO IT
- Put the whole can in a pot of water, and bring to a boil. The can must remain unopened, and must therefore just be boiled with the contents in.
- Boil the can for 3 hours. Always make sure that the can is completely covered with water. Therefore, if water is constantly evaporating from the pot, you should add a little more water. Otherwise, the can can take care of itself.
- Remove the pan from the heat after the 3 hours. Allow the can to cool slightly so you can hold on to it without burning yourself. Open the can and transfer the caramel to a clean jam jar or patent glass. Refrigerate until you need it, preferably about an hour.
What is dulce de leche – and how to make dulce de leche?
Dulce de leche is a homemade caramel that can be used for desserts all over the world. I have shared a little different below. It is also super good over oatmeal, e.g. along with chopped nuts and sour apple pieces. It is extremely easy to make your own caramel, it only takes a little time. A single ingredient, a pot and a little water – bum! Then you have your own homemade dulce de leche.
Fits for a delicious homemade caramel
Feel free to place the can on its side while it is boiling, so that it can roll around easily during cooking. Also, feel free to push a little for it occasionally. In this way, the condensed milk is exposed to even heat throughout. If the can is upright, you may find that the caramel at the bottom is cooked slightly more (and therefore thicker) than the layer at the top of the can. And it can give something that looks like lumps when you touch it.
If there should be a few lumps in the caramel due to uneven distribution of the heat, you can always “save” it, by blending the whole tin lightly when it is done.
You can adjust the cooking time yourself, depending on how liquid / solid you want your caramel. Do you want a very liquid caramel, which you for example? can pour over ice cream for dessert, you can just cook for 2.5 hours, and if you want a very firm caramel, then cook for 4 hours.
